Faith that Rests
Mark 4:35-41
This week’s Gospel lesson sees Jesus asleep during a terrifying storm. When His disciples wake Him in fear, Jesus addresses their lack of faith, showing that their fear stems from a lack of trust. In contrast, Jesus’ rest amidst the storm demonstrates what genuine faith looks like.
The disciples, being experienced fishermen, knew the dangers of sudden storms on the waters. Their fear indicated that this storm was no ordinary storm; it was likely one that could easily have swallowed them up in death.
The more I meditate on this gospel lesson, the more I am intrigued by the attention given to Jesus’ sleeping and Jesus’ indication of the disciples’ lack of faith. Here are a few key takeaways:
1. Jesus is Lord over Everything: The most evident lesson is Jesus’ authority over the storm. His command calms the waters, revealing His lordship over creation. This demonstrates that even nature obeys Him, affirming His divine power (Luke 19:40).
2. Faith Brings Rest: Jesus shows that our faith in Him should allow us to rest, even amidst life’s storms. He could sleep deeply because He knew His authority over the storm (Hebrews 1:3). We, too, can find peace in trusting Jesus’ lordship.
If you lose sleep or panic over life’s storms, it may indicate a lack of trust in Jesus. Identify areas where your faith is weak and seek growth through God’s word and prayer. As your faith strengthens, you can rest like Jesus, regardless of what life brings.
Reflect on this lesson and find peace in the assurance that Jesus is Lord over every storm.
