Riding Shotgun
(Mark 10:35-45)
In Mark 10, James and John ask Jesus if they can sit at His left and right in His glory. This request reveals their misunderstanding of Jesus' mission and the nature of His kingdom. They envisioned a worldly kingdom where power and position were paramount, not realizing that Jesus' path to glory involved suffering and sacrifice.
Jesus responds by asking if they can drink the cup He will drink or be baptized with His baptism, referring to His impending suffering and death. He explains that true greatness in His kingdom is not about seeking the highest positions but about serving others and sacrificing oneself.
Jesus teaches that to be first in His kingdom, one must be willing to take the backseat in this world. This means prioritizing God's will over our desires and looking out for the interests of others above our own. Jesus exemplified this by coming not to be served but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).
Jesus assures us that those who take the backseat in this world will ride shotgun in His kingdom. Those who serve will be exalted and seated with Christ in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:5-6).
By taking a backseat in this world by prioritizing God's will and the interests of others, we align ourselves with Jesus's teachings and are promised to ride shotgun in His kingdom.
Questions for Application:
1. How can I prioritize God's will over my desires in my current circumstances?
2. How can I serve others and put their interests above mine?
3. What steps can I take to curb my desire for prominence and embrace humility?
Peace be with you!
